It’s weird here, being far away from my parents… I know it’s a little late to be feeling this way, but it just sort of hit me this week. The semester is almost over and soon I’ll be back with them; it’s weird when I think of how long it’s been since I’ve seen the two of them. I wonder how Blossom and Brandon are doing… They stopped calling me after the first month… Mom probably made them. She never called.
I didn’t expect her to or anything like that…I just thought I would have you know… meant more to her than that. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised. She liked Blossom better anyway.
I have my dad though, so that’s good. We’re a lot alike he and I. At least, I think we are. I’m more like him than I am my mother —personality wise that is. Mom and I have the obvious things in common… I guess… this is it…
Britney was born in the United States of America to a German father and Egyptian mother. She was the first child of their others to the immigrant parents. Her life was a simple one. She attended school like most kids her age and had a decent relationship with her parents — her mother however was always a bit stand-offish towards her and favored her younger siblings more. Britney found herself pinning for her mother’s affection as a child, eager to please her and disappointed when nothing seemed to work. She was convinced that her mother didn’t love her like she did her other children until she hit puberty.
She was a late bloomer really, it wasn’t until she hit 15 that her body began to change. Britney knew something wasn’t right, aside for the fact that she wasn’t getting her monthly gift. Her body felt weird. Often, her arms and legs would tingle, starting at the center of her back.
The young blonde went to her father for advice; she never got along with her mother and her father was the only one she could talk to. He seemed a bit uncomfortable with her questions but of course answered her as honestly as he could. There were things that he of course could not answer and pointed her in the direction of her mother.
Britney was hesitant to talk with her mother, she had long since given up on her mother. However, that day when she sought her out, it was as if her mother had been expecting her. Her mother was a fairly dark skinned woman with wide, oval shaped eyes and friendly looking face. Her hair was thick and midnight black, tight coils curling around her head becomingly. One thing about her mother that Britney had noticed as a child, was that her mother almost always disappeared after a certain time. Her father instructed her not to bother her mother during this time and she never questioned it. However, she had a feeling that the reason her mother was always disappearing had a lot to do with what was going on with her.
For the first time, her mother smiled at her. It was a slight, knowing smile. Britney was surprised but didn’t show it too much, she did however, notice how tired her mother was looking.
“The Unseely…” her mother whispered softly.
Britney hadn’t the slightest idea what the older woman was talking about, but took a spot across from her in the kitchen. Her mother had been peeling and orange with a knife, going over the fruit in circular motions.
To be continued…
